From Seattle: Island visitors typically arrive via Seattle, WA, a three-hour trip by car and the Washington State ferry, or by way of a commercial airline with four 30 minute flights a day from Seattle.

From British Columbia: Visitors from British Columbia come by way of ferry from Sydney, BC (near Victoria), a two-hour trip, one-way. Friday Harbor is also a popular flight destination for NW private plane owners looking for a quick get-away.
